Creating a brilliant website design can be a daunting task sometimes. Not just because of all the steps involved in this process, but also because of all things you should take into consideration and the direction your website design should take on.  

And a good website, which accommodates effectively plenty of content with an excellent user experience is often a tricky balancing act to pull off.  Should you attempt to present the user the whole information in a clean, organized manner, or you should reveal it bit-by-bit, to create an engaging trip that tugs the visitor on the road to the enlightenment?

If you get it wrong, and you will overwhelm your visitors, they’ll leave your website without retaining anything from what they’ve just read.  And maybe they will not come back again, as long as their experience on your website was not exactly what they expected.

But if you get it right, you’ll gain a new audience, who not only understand your message, but they will come back again and again, and even bring few friends with them.

If there is one thing true about the website design, it’s that it is always evolving. The design is dynamic, and it must adjust to accommodate the form and the function. And because of its ever-changing nature, it can be a challenge not only to keep up with the newest design trends but also to follow few principles that should live in every website design.

  1. Color – the site’s color should always match your brand’s color scheme and have consistency through the site. Colors evoke emotions for your website visitors and sustain your brand messages. Therefore you should take it into consideration when choosing the colors for your website.  Also, you keep in mind that the colors on your website should be easy to read and pleasant to the eyes.
  2. White Space – by using the white space for your website design, you will allow the content and the visitors’ eyes room to breathe   
  3. Font – the site’s font doesn’t necessary match your logo but it should fit in your brand. Aside from this, making sure that the font is legible, is one of the most important things. You can vary and mix different fonts through the site, to increase the visual intrigue and add visual appeal, but make sure they complement each other well. Also, keeping the body font consistent across the whole site is essential.
  4. Simplicity – the simpler, the better. Keeping your website design simple allows that “clean” look your visitors are looking for.
  5. Consistency – keep the design consistent. The website colors, fonts, button styles, heading and subheading sizes and styles, image styles and sizes and backgrounds are among the pieces to keep your site consistent.
  6. Usability – make the functionality the key of your website. An appealing visual website shouldn’t sacrifice the ease of usage for a better visual. Creating user-friendly websites with easy to understand navigation and page layout is what determines how your visitors will interact with your website.
  7. Visual hierarchy – the relative importance of different content areas and elements can be visually implied in many ways, ranging from the typography (headlines, sub-headings, body text, quotes, etc.) to image size, style, and saturation, placement, etc.

They kept the information concise and focused, taking into consideration that you don’t need walls of text for attracting and engaging your visitors. Give them the most important information first. In the same time, the navigation menu is very friendly, letting you drive easily through the website.


  • Brooklyn Soap Company

One of my favorites in the list. The website design is clean and bold, using the white space very well and allowing the visitor’s eyes to rest. The company makes quality products and they don’t need to astonish with a lot of sparkly or complicated graphics and animation to get your interest. Both the website and soaps have an undeniable classy feel, underlined by the black and white color scheme.

This website is entirely funky and funny. The visitor’s curiosity is caused by bright, vivid and sparkly colors, lots of eye-catching imagery, icons, and fonts you wouldn’t usually find in a law company’s website. Color Theory for Web Designers – How to Choose the Right Color Scheme for Your Website

You have decided to create a website. One of the first questions that you will face sounds like “What colors should I choose to make it professional and at the same time visually appealing?” This is not surprising because color is the first things that attract your visitors’ attention, that’s why a color scheme is considered to be the foremost thing every designer should know.

Color affects not only the appearance of a website, but also its effectiveness. It means that an average time spent on site, a number of returned visitors, and even conversion depend on the choice of the color scheme. Moreover, taking into account visualization of modern technologies, color plays one of the main roles on the Internet. And you shouldn’t forget this rule when you start your own website.

However, some of us can hardly pick up a t-shirt that matches the color of the jeans, so it’s not always entirely clear how to choose the right color scheme for your website. But don’t give up, because the theory of color comes to the rescue. Having studied its basics, you will be able to create beautiful and effective color combinations. All experienced web designers rely on the theory, which means that you can do that too! Let’s talk about its main principles, and you will see that everything is much easier than it seems.

Your Working Tool

A color wheel is a basic element of the color theory. We think you all saw him, but if not, here you are:


Color circle is your main working tool, clearly demonstrating how colors are created and combined. They are divided into three basic ones – red, blue and yellow, that can be used to create additional colors like green, orange, and purple.
However, circle does not always consist of six sectors, they can include twelve or more variations. In this case, six colors are added as a result of primary and secondary colors mixing. Those are yellow-green, green-blue, blue-violet, violet-red, red-orange and orange-yellow. There are circles that contain 24 sectors with even more additional hues.

Warm and Cool Colors

All color wheels can be divided into two halves. One of them includes warm colors like yellow, orange and red (most shades of brown also belong to the warm color palette). Cool colors are: blue, green, purple and all shades of gray. And here goes the question “Which colors are better – warm or cool?” The answer is obvious – there is no “better” color. Your choice should depend on the effect you are going to achieve and on associations with a particular feeling or idea. Warm colors are considered to be cheerful, friendly and stimulating; cold colors are in most cases calming and relaxing.

As a result, the choice of color depends on your corporate style, needs, and an atmosphere you want to create. If you like experimenting, and you probably do :), you can mix warm and cool colors, the main thing here is to know how to do that right, and in the next part, we will show that to you.

Color Mixing Basics

There are several working color schemes based on the position of colors in the circle. Let’s start with the simplest one, and then move on to more complicated schemes:

Complementary color scheme

According to this scheme, you can combine two contrasting colors located opposite to each other. For example, you can use red and green, or yellow and purple. For a more elegant combination, it is recommended to add neutral additional shades – beige, light brown, light gray, black or white. Those can be the background colors, for instance.

Analogous color scheme

According to this scheme, three colors located next to each other are used. Examples: orange, yellow-orange and yellow, or purple, blue-violet and blue. All these colors will be well combined with each other because of their close neighborhood in the color circle.

Color triad

Speaking about this scheme it will be necessary to remind you some basic geometric rules. Do not be afraid, there is nothing complicated: you take any three colors equidistant from each other. If you connect them using lines, you will get an equilateral triangle. Possible combinations are: yellow-green, orange-red and violet-blue; yellow-orange, red-violet and blue-green. This is a very rich, contrasting scheme, so you will need to find a balance and choose one color as the main one, and make the other two additional.

Split-complementary color scheme

In this scheme, you select a color as the main one and combine it with the other two, that are standing close to its complementary color on the color wheel. If you connect the selected colors with lines, you will get an isosceles triangle. Possible options are: red, yellow-green and blue-green, or purple, yellow-orange and yellow-green. This is a rather contrasting scheme, that has less tension than a complementary one.

Rectangle color scheme

Here you need to choose two pairs of complementary colors. If you connect them with lines, you will get a rectangle. Example: yellow-orange, yellow green, blue-violet and red-violet. This scheme is a perfect option for unusual combinations and creative websites. Though, if you are afraid of creating a color chaos on your website you can choose one color as the basic, and use the other three to make accents.

Monochromatic color scheme

It is clear from the name that this scheme combines shades of the same color. You can both mix dark and light shades, and choose either dark or light variations.

How to Customize Your Facebook News Feed to Maximize Your Productivity

Facebook is still the leading platform for marketers. From our State of Social Media 2016 report, we found that 93 percent of marketers are actively using Facebook for their business.

As social media marketers, we spend a lot of time on Facebook, managing our Pages, engaging our fans, finding good content, and creating ads.

In this post, I’d love to go through some of the less-known ways of customizing your Facebook News Feed to help you cut through the clutter, save time, and be more efficient.

Let’s jump right in.

Customize your Facebook News Feed

4 Key Areas of Your Facebook News Feed to Customize (and How to Customize Them)

For easy reference, here are the few sections we would cover:

1. News Feed

Set your preferences

The News Feed is where we get most of the content and information on Facebook. With a few quick customizations, we can ensure that we see the most relevant and useful posts.

Facebook has made it really easy to set your preferences for your News Feed. To edit your News Feed Preferences, click on the drop-down arrow (Arrow) in the upper-right corner of any Facebook page and select “News Feed Preferences”:

Alternatively, click on the three dots (Triple dots) beside “News Feed” on the left sidebar and select “Edit Preferences”:

In there, you will be able to adjust a few preferences:


  • Prioritize who to see first: This allows you to choose whose posts would always appear at the top of your News Feed. You can select up to 30 people or Pages to see first, and they won’t be ranked (ie. your second selection wouldn’t be seen second). In this window, Facebook shows your friends first. If you want to select Pages to see first, click on “All” and select “Pages only”.
  • Unfollow people to hide their posts: This allows you to choose whose posts you want to stop seeing on your News Feed. You can filter by “Friends only”, “Pages only”, or “Groups only”. Only you will know who you have chosen to unfollow.
  • Reconnect with people you unfollowed: This allows you to follow a person, Page, or group that you unfollowed in the past. While checking this setting, I noticed I accidentally unfollowed a friend previously. So it might be worth checking this setting even if you might not have wanted to unfollow anyone.
  • Discover Pages that match your interests: To help you add more variety to your News Feed, Facebook also suggests some Pages you might like.
  • See more options: This section includes things like the apps you have previously chosen to hide from your News Feed.

Leverage notifications

Taking it a step further, you can even be notified whenever your favorite Facebook Page post something. Facebook gives you the option to choose the types of posts you want to be notified about.

Go to the Facebook Page, hover over the “Following” tab, and click on the pen icon (Pen icon) beside “Notifications”.

In there, you can adjust the notifications for the Page’s posts, events, and live videos.

See most recent stories first

Facebook’s algorithm by default shows you the top stories from your friends, Pages you liked, and groups you are in, at the top of your News Feed. If you want to see the stories in the order they were posted, click on the three dots (Triple dots) to the right of “News Feed” on the left sidebar and select “Most Recent”.

Your News Feed will automatically return to the default Top Stories setting when you visit your Facebook homepage again.

Teach Facebook’s algorithm your preferences

You can also “teach” Facebook’s Algorithm to stop showing things you don’t want to see so that it will show you what you want to see. This is a bit more manual and tedious but it allows you to curate the best content on your News Feed.

Whenever you see a type of post you want to stop seeing or see less of, click on the drop-down arrow (Arrow) in the upper-right corner of the post and you will see these options:

(I wouldn’t want to unfollow Paul or hide all from Transformers, though. 😉)

You can do the same for ads, too:

Adjust your video settings

Videos are becoming a big part of Facebook, and you are likely seeing more videos than other types of posts on your News Feed. Adjust your video settings to give yourself the best experience. You can change the default quality, stop auto-play, show captions, and customize captions display.

To access these settings, click on the drop-down arrow (Arrow) in the upper-right corner of any Facebook page and select “Settings”. Then, select “Videos” at the bottom of the left sidebar. (Or click this quick link to access these settings.)

2. Left Sidebar

The left sidebar is for you to quickly access different parts of Facebook. You will see three main categories: “Shortcuts”, “Explore”, and “Create”. The one we can customize is “Shortcuts”.

According to Facebook,

Shortcuts are quick links to some of your Pages, groups, and games. Shortcuts are selected automatically by default, but you can pin something to your shortcuts so it’s always shown at the top or hide it from the list.

When you hover over “Shortcuts”, an “Edit” link will appear. Click on that and you will be able to edit your shortcuts:

For each Page, Group, or game, you can choose to sort it in the list automatically, pin to the top of the list, or hide it from the list. I’d recommend pinning the Facebook Pages and Groups you are managing to the top of the list.

Use friend lists

Just like Twitter, you can create lists to organize your friends. This allows you to see Facebook posts of certain groups of friends whom you are more interested in keeping in touch with.

You can find the “Friends List” option under “Explore” on the left sidebar.

To help you get started, Facebook has created three lists for you:

  • Close Friends: Friends you may want to share exclusively with. You will get notifications when they post but can turn these extra notifications off at any time.
  • Acquaintances: People you might want to share less with. You can choose to exclude this group of people when you post something, by choosing “Friends except Acquaintances” in the audience selector.
  • Restricted: This list is for people you’ve added as a friend but just don’t want to share with (maybe your boss). When you add someone to your Restricted list, they will only be able to see your Public content or posts of yours that you tag them in.

These lists are empty to start with. Once you click through to any list, there will be an “Edit List” option for you to add and remove people from the list.

You can also create your own friend lists by selecting “Create List”.

Bonus: Facebook also creates Smart Lists for you. Smart lists are automatically updated based on profile info your friends have in common with you (like your work, school, family, and city). You can also manually add and remove friends from the smart lists to make them more accurate.

View other feeds

Apart from the News Feed you see on the homepage, there are two other feeds you can view.

1. Pages Feed of pages you have liked with your personal account

This feed shows you the recent updates from the Pages you’ve liked. I believe these updates are also arranged using Facebook’s algorithm as they aren’t arranged chronologically.

You can access this feed by clicking on “Pages Feed” on the left sidebar under “Explore”.

2. Pages Feed of pages you have liked as your Facebook Page

There is a feed that shows you only the posts from other Pages that you have liked as your Page. This is a convenient way to engage with other Pages using your Page or to conduct research on other Pages.

You can choose to like and comment on these posts as yourself or your Facebook page. To change this setting, click on the tiny profile image in the lower-right corner of each post.

The option to see this feed isn’t quite on the left sidebar. To access this feed, go to your Facebook Page and click on “See Pages Feed” on the right column.

3. Right column

Get a quick overview of your Facebook ads

On the right column of your Facebook homepage, you might see a section with information about your Facebook ads. I believe this section appears if you are using or have used Facebook ads for any of your Facebook Pages.

You can switch between your Facebook Pages to see their respective ad results. Click on the drop-down arrow (Arrow) beside the name of your Facebook Page to toggle between your Pages.

In this section, there will be

  • a tip for Facebook ads
  • this week’s ad results
  • latest unread message for the Page
  • today’s ad results (you can toggle to yesterday’s or lifetime results)
  • options to create an ad or a post

4. Right sidebar

Show or hide games, tickers, and chat

On the right sidebar, there are three sections:

  • Facebook games
  • a real-time ticker of your friend’s activities
  • Facebook chat sidebar

If you find the games and ticker distracting, you can turn them off by clicking on the gear icon (Gear icon) in the lower-right corner and selecting “Hide Games” and “Hide Ticker”.

It can be quite handy to leave the Facebook chat sidebar there. HubSpot’s State of Inbound 2016 report found that 38 percent and 24 percent of marketers prefer to use social media and messaging apps respectively for business-related communications. With the chat sidebar, you can quickly send a fellow marketer a message if you two prefer to connect through Facebook.

If message pop-ups tend to distract you, you can also choose to turn off chat. Messages from friends will automatically go to your inbox for you to read later.

Bonus: There are advanced chat settings where you can turn off chat for certain friends or lists of friends.

If you find the right sidebar too distracting, you can turn it off entirely, too. Click on the gear icon (Gear icon) in the lower-right corner, and there will be an option to “Hide Sidebar”.

Use the Messenger web browser app

If you use Facebook Messenger for your work but don’t want to be distracted by your Facebook notifications, I’d recommend using Facebook Messenger’s web browser app.

I have been using it for more than a year now, and it has been really helpful in preventing me from being distracted by new notifications.

My Journey Of Learning Programming Through Flatiron School #17

My name is Mason Ellwood, and I’m currently working on Flatiron School’s Online Full Stack Web Development Program. Each week, I’ll be writing about my experience, what I’m learning, and tips on learning to code.

In this post I am going to be skipping through a lot of material that was covered within The Flatiron School, this mainly entailing Object Oriented Ruby. At this point, or if you are following along with me learning Ruby you should have a basic understanding of what OO Ruby is and what it entails. If not be at the point that it will be easy to pick up where I left off on your own. Doing this will allow me to write about the current material I am working through and allow you to quickly catch up to where I am in the school, giving you a better understanding of what the school offers in terms of material covered as a whole.

So here we go!

What the heck is SQL:

SQL is a structured data language that is used for managing data in a database. Its sole purpose is for talking with the database. You may also people talking about SQL in terms of a special purpose or domain specific programming language.

SQL has taken a few forms as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or SQLite which for this course we will be using. And as a web developer, you will be working closely with databases to manage data that is associated with your application. But how do we create a database and access information?

First you have to make sure that SQLite is installed. Because I am using a Mac, this makes this process much easier, and a majority of the time unnecessary because it comes preinstalled on your machine. In your terminal create a new folder that will hold you database file. Then in your terminal navigate to that folder and type sqlite3. This should return something along the line of what is shown below.

This below tells you that there is a version of SQLite downloaded on your machine. If you receive an alternative message or error, please visit homebrew and download their gem package, this will install SQLite on your machine and create the appropriate result. To create a database now that you know that SQLite is live, run (SQLite test_sqlite.db). Within the (sqlite>) prompt not accessible to you, type (create table test_table(id);) and then (.quit). Then open up the folder that you creates your database by using (open .).

This will then create a database for you that you will now be able to operate on. Keep in mind that all SQL statements that you write in your terminal, inside of SQLite prompt must be terminated with a semicolon, though this excludes .quit.

SQL Database Basics:

A relational database like SQLite stores data in a structure we refer to as a table. A table in a database if a lot like a spreadsheet. When defining columns in out table, then we can store related data in those columns. This stored data is referred to as records, which are placed in rows within columns in our database.

Keep in mind though with everything there is the convention of typing. Column names follow simple rules, such as always use lower case and when column names are multiple words, use snake case.

So let’s start from the beginning. Let’s create a database and define its schema.

Once the database has been initiated, you then need to define your table. Running something like CREATE TABLE cats; will result in error. This is because SQLite expects definitions of the structure being created. When we create database tables, we need to specify some column names, along with the type of data we are planning to store in each column.

Capitalization is arbitrary but rather convention for visually separating SQL commands from names. This will save you time later, cutting time down through debugging.

Awesome! So now you know how to create and add columns to your table, within your newly created database. SQL so far has been surprisingly fun, and learning to query a database is a great skill to be acquainted with. In the next post, I will get into how to operate, add and subtract from your database.

How to use Facebook Analytics

1. Overview:
How your Page is doing

The Overview tab within Facebook Insights does more than it says. Apart from showing you key metrics of your Page (Page Summary), it also shows you the key metrics for your five most recent posts and a brief comparison of your Page with similar Facebook Pages.

Page Summary

Page Summary

The Page Summary section shows you the key metrics of your Page for the last seven days, such as Page Likes, Post Engagement, and Reach. It also tells you the percentage change from the previous period and shows graphs for the period.

This section is great for getting a quick assessment of your Facebook Page performance.

For example, if you are focusing on growing your Page, you can quickly access your growth by looking at your Page Likes and Reach. If you are posting more videos to drive engagement, you can immediately see if your strategy is working by looking at your video views and post engagement.

Your 5 Most Recent Posts

Your 5 Most Recent Posts

This section shows you the key information of your latest five posts — published date and time, post caption, post type, targeting, reach, and engagement.

This section is great for getting a sense of how well your recent posts are performing and which type of posts are performing well recently. For example, you might notice that curated link posts outperformed other types of posts. Then, you could experiment with posting more link posts.

Pages to Watch

Pages to Watch

Pages to Watch is one of our favorite Facebook Page features. It gives you a quick comparison of your Page with a few other Pages you want to watch. If you click on any of the Pages, it’ll show you the top posts of that Page from the current week.

This section is great for seeing how your Facebook Page is performing among your peers and competitors. By looking at the top posts of those Pages, you can also stay in touch with what’s trending in your industry or curate great content for your Facebook fans.


Export your data (at Page Summary): If you want to analyze your Page data further, you can export metrics of your Page, posts, or videos as a CSV or Excel spreadsheet. Facebook provides a lot of data in the spreadsheet.

Discover what’s working (at Pages to Watch): If you click on any of the Pages, you will get a pop-up with the top posts of that Page — ranked from the most engaging to the least engaging.

The Likes tab lets you go beyond just knowing the number of Likes your Page has. It shows you the growth, averages, and sources of the Likes.

This graph shows you the overall trend of your Page Likes. If the graph is showing a plateau or a downward trend, it’d be great to dig into it and understand the cause.

This graph informs you the daily growth of your Page Likes and breaks down the proportion of (organic or paid) Likes and Unlikes your Page receives. While it’s great to have positive net Likes, it’s helpful to monitor the Unlikes trend, too.

This graph tells you where your Page Likes came from, such as directly from your Page, from your ads, or Page suggestions that Facebook serves to users. For example, if you are running Facebook Page Likes ads, you should see the “Ads” portion increasing.


Set your date range: At the top of the page, you can set the date range you are interested in. You can either drag the indicators on the graph, select “1W” (for 1 week), “1M” (for 1 month), or “1Q” (for 1 quarter), or set specified start and end dates.

Know your Like and Unlike sources: If you click or drag to select a date range on any of the graphs, it will show you the Like and Unlike Sources for that selected period.

Compare your averages: If you click on any of the metrics on the right of the graphs, you’ll get two averages for that metric — Your average for the last period and your average for the current period.

3. Reach:
What’s your reach and what factors affect it

The Reach tab informs you about the reach of your Facebook Page and posts and the factors that increase or decrease your reach.

This graph shows you the number of people your posts have reached (organically or through promotions). It can be a quick way to assess your organic reach over time and if your ads are working.

When a post receives engagement, Facebook will serve it to more people as the engagement on the post implies that people are interested in the post. More engagement, higher reach.

It seems like this chart will only appear if you have a high number of reactions to your Facebook posts. It’s a great way to judge the sentiments of your posts — positive (Love, Wow, and Haha) or negative (Sad and Angry).

Hide, Report as Spam, and Unlikes

Hide, report as spam, and Unlikes chart

“Hide Posts”, “Hide All Posts”, “Report as Spam”, and “Unlike Page” are considered as negative feedback. They are ways users tell Facebook that they don’t want to see a Page’s posts. Facebook will accordingly show those posts to fewer people. As you’d want to keep these negative feedback low or zero, it’s great to monitor this graph.

Total Reach

Total reach graph

Total reach is the number of people who saw any activity from your Page such as your posts, posts to your Page, ads, mentions, and check-ins. Just like post reach, it’s a great way to see how your organic and paid reach has been growing. For example, the graph above is our total reach for the past quarter, and it’s showing a promising increase.


Set your date range and compare your averages: Just like in the Likes tab, you can set your data range at the top of the page and compare the averages of each metric by clicking on the metric.

Understand your posts activity: If you see a spike of reach, engagement, or negative feedback, you can click or drag to select that section of the graph and find out more. Facebook will show you the active posts during that period, in decreasing impression order.

For example, there was a spike in our reach on February 22. When I click on February 22 on the graph, I learned that this post was taking off that day and our audience likes such a post.

See your reach breakdown: If you prefer numbers over visualization, you can click or drag to select a date range on the Total Reach graph to see your total, organic, and paid reach in a table format.

4. Page Views:
Who viewed which section of your Page

The Page Views tab is a little like the traffic report in Google Analytics. In here, you’ll learn about your page views and top traffic sources.


  • Total Views
  • Total People Who Viewed
  • Top Sources

Total page views graph

Total views is the number of times people viewed your Page. If the same person visited your Page twice, it’ll be considered as two views.

Total people who viewed is the number of people who have viewed your Page. If the same person visited your Page twice, it’ll be considered only as one. This figure should be equal or less than your total views.

This graph shows the top five traffic sources that have directed people to your Page. Knowing this allows you to increase your efforts on those sources if you want to increase your page views.


Set your date range: Just like in the Likes tab, you can set your data range at the top of the page.

Breakdown the data: You can break the page views metrics down by certain characteristics. For total views, you can break it down by section (of your Facebook Page). For total people who viewed, you can break it down by section, age and gender, country, city, and device. This can help you understand more about the people who are interested in your Page.

5. Actions on Page:
What people did on your Page

The Actions on Page tab allows you to understand what people do when they are on your Page. The few actions that Facebook considered are clicking on “Get Directions”, clicking on your phone number, clicking on your website, and clicking on your action button.

This graph shows you the number of actions people have taken on your Page. This graph and the subsequent graphs show you the number of people who took the respective actions on your Page.

Our action button says “Sign Up” and directs people who click on it to our homepage. From this graph, we can get a sense of the traffic our Page drove to our homepage. (We also use UTM for the link for additional tracking.)


Set your date range: Similar to the few tabs before, you can set your data range at the top of the page.

Breakdown the data: Just like your page views graphs, you can break the actions taken graphs down by certain characteristics.

6. Posts:
How well your posts are performing

The Posts tab contains all the information about your posts such as reach and engagement. You can also boost your posts from this tab directly.

When your fans are online

We believe that there isn’t a universal best time to post on Facebook, but there’s the best time for your brand to post on Facebook. This section can help you with that. It shows you how active your Facebook fans are, on average, on each day or the week and each hour of the day.

You can hover over each day to see an overlay of the activity on that particular day vs the averages.

This section tells you how each type of posts (e.g. link, photo, or video) fare in terms of average reach and average engagement.

From here, you can tell which type of posts does best on your Page, and you can adjust your posting strategy accordingly. For example, if you find that videos have the highest average reach and engagement, you could experiment with posting more videos.

Top Posts from Pages You Watch

Top post from Pages you watch

This section is quite similar to the Pages to Watch section in the Overview tab. While the one in the Overview tab shows you the overall performance of those Pages, this section shows you the top post of the week from each of those Pages and the engagement it received.

This section lists all the posts you have published on your Page and the relevant information — published date and time, post caption, post type, targeting, reach, and engagement.


Sort your posts: You can sort your posts by published date, reach, or engagement (post clicks or reactions) by clicking on the title of the column.

View different metrics: You can view different metrics for reach and engagement. For reach, you can choose:

  • Reach
  • Reach: Organic / Paid
  • Impressions: Organic / Paid
  • Reach: Fans / Non-Fans

For engagement, you can choose:

7. Events:
How successful your event pages are

If you often organize Facebook events, the Events tab will enable you to be more data-driven by providing you with key data of your events. You can find out what’s working and what’s not working with your event promotion. You get data such as the number of people who saw your event, the number of people who responded to your event, and the demographics of your audience.

In this section, you have several graphs about the awareness and engagement of your all events. These are the data available:

Apart from awareness and engagement, you can also get a breakdown of your audience by age group and gender. This can inform you about the type of people who are most interested in your events.

The second half of the page shows you the insights of your upcoming and past events. You can toggle between upcoming and past using the drop-down menu in the upper-left corner.


Click to see more insights: If you click on an event title, a pop-up will appear, with the data of that particular event. As it shows data up to the last 28 days only, you might want to record them down after the event.

8. Videos:
How well your videos are performing

The Videos tab tells you how well videos are performing on your Page. It mainly tells you the number of video views, broken down into:

  • Organic vs Paid
  • Unique vs Repeat
  • Auto-Played vs Clicked-to-Play

  • 10-Second Views
  • Top Videos

This graph shows you the number of times your videos were viewed. Facebook consider 3 seconds or more as a video view.

10-Second Views

10-second video views graph

This graph shows you the number of times your videos were viewed for 10 seconds or more. If your video is less than 10 seconds, Facebook counts a 10-second view when people watch 97 percent of it.

While this number tends to be lower than video views (i.e. the 3-second views), I think it is more indicative of the number of engaged views.

Top Videos

Top videos

This section shows you the top five videos which have been viewed for three seconds or more, the most. It can give you a quick idea of the kind of videos that perform well among your fans.


View different breakdowns: In the upper-right corner of each graph, there is a drop-down menu where you can choose between different breakdowns.

Compare your averages: If you click on any of the metrics on the right of the graphs, you’ll get two averages for that metric — Your average for the last period and your average for the current period.

Click to see more insights: Clicking on a video title will bring up a pop-up with the deeper insights of that video. You can click on any of the stats and see even more insights.

9. People:
Who liked, saw, or engaged with your Page

The People tab is a simple overview of the people who liked your Page, saw your posts, or engaged with your Page or posts.


  • Your Fans
  • People Reached / People Engaged

Your fans are people who liked your Page. This section breaks down your fans by age group, gender, location, and language. From here, you can tell which demographic are most interested in your Page.

People engaged data

People reached are the people who saw your posts in the past 28 days while people engaged are the people who liked, commented on, or shared any of your posts or engaged with your Page (e.g. messaged) in the past 28 days.

What’s interesting is that people who saw or engaged with your posts are not necessarily only your fans. This creates the differences in percentages. For example, while 41 percent of our fans are women, 55 percent of people engaged are women. This could imply that our posts tend to be more interesting to women than men.


Learn more with Audience Insights: Audience Insights, a tool within Facebook Ads Manager, is much more powerful than the People tab for understanding your fans. While it does not show you information about people who saw or engaged with your posts, it shows much more information about your fans.

Besides demographics information, you can discover data such as other Pages that your fans like. (You can use this information to set your Pages to Watch!)

To access Audience Insights, head to Facebook Ads Manager and select “Audience Insights” from the drop-down menu in the upper-left corner. Alternatively, you can visit this direct link: https://www.facebook.com/ads/audience-insights/

Once there, select “People connected to your Page” and the Page you are interested in.

The U.S. is selected as the location by default. You can deselect it if you wish to look at your audience worldwide, however, Household and Purchase information are currently only available for the audience in the U.S.

10. Messages:
Response times and Messenger analytics

The Messages tab shows you the performance metrics of your conversations with people on Messenger.

Here’s what each of the metrics means:

Total conversations is the number of conversations between your Page and people on Messenger.

Your Responsiveness is the percentage of messages you’ve answered and your average response time.

Deleted Conversations is the number of conversations with your Page that people deleted.

Marked as Spam is the percentage and number of conversations from your Page that were marked as spam.

Blocked Conversations is the percentage and number of conversations from your Page that have been blocked.



See up to 180 days: For messages, you can see the stats for up to the past 180 days. You can select a timeframe by clicking on “Last 7 days”.

11. Others:
Promotions, Branded Content, and Local

The remaining tabs might not be as relevant to most people as those above or they might not even appear for you. I’ll briefly go through each of them in case you are curious about them.



The Promotions tab gives you a quick overview of your recent promotions. It’s a great place for you to check your recent promotions while you are in your Facebook Insights. Alternatively, you can use the Facebook Ads Manager, which might be more comprehensive.

Branded content

When you get mentions from a Verified Page (a Facebook Page with a blue tick), the Branded Content tab will appear among the list of tabs and the posts will show up there.

You’ll be able to see the reach and engagement stats, just like your own posts. You can even share and promote these posts.


Local business data

If you run a local business Page, you’ll have a Local tab. In this tab, you have information about the foot traffic in your area, demographic information about people near your place, and percentage of people nearby who saw your Facebook ads. (Mind-blowing!)

1. Colors


Choosing color is extremely important for website design, because they influence positively or negatively the visitor’s emotions, feelings, thoughts and perceptions and ultimately influence the conversion rate.    

Pantone 2017 color of the year is Greenery. A refreshing and revitalizing shade, Greenery is symbolic for new beginnings and it is also emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality. According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, “Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose”.

Well, I don’t expect (and I wouldn’t want) to see all the new launched websites in 2017 to be green.☺ But I’m sure it will inspire many people who will design or redesign their websites.

Due to the popularity of Google’s Material Design, the colors and color combinations recommended in those design guidelines are likely to become more popular in 2017. The colors are bright and bold and they will be always a trend, because the vibrant colors are a design element that stands the test of time.

On the other hand, duotone was the hottest design trend in 2016 and I would expect to see it becoming more popular this year.

2. Bold, creative typography


Because in the online world our focus should be on content, more and more website designers use creative typography just as big and bold as the statement itself.

As you see in the screenshots listed above, in terms of “big” and “bold”, it’s not about the size and weight of the font, but rather about dedicating significant space to a simple, yet all-encompassing statement about the product or service.   


This trend is not new, but 2017 is likely to continue to push of boundaries of what designers will do with the type and we’ll expect so see not just more space on the screen, but also more creative typeface as we were used to see on the web.

3. Authentic photography


In the last years, we’ve all heard about delivering trust. But this is not just about the copy we publish on the website, but also about imagery we use. The time of general stock photos is gone. If we talk about products, we want to see them in action. We want to see them in a natural light, integrated in the environment they are supposed to be used. And as much details as we can. We want to imagine ourselves using the products. If we are talking about services, we want to see the real people who use them. Therefore, more and more companies, from the largest to the smallest brands, are opting for authenticity when it comes to photos used for their websites. If the content is the king, the photos are its queen.

4. Retro modern style


Whether it is pixel art, vintage typography or 80s or 90s inspired imagery, retro look with a modern twist has been a trend for few years and has become more and more popular in a variety of web design contexts.  Regardless if it’s about online shops, portfolios, corporate website or blogs, when apply “old-style” elements to their work, the designers produce creative and appealing designs that make their websites stand out and look really different.

For example, Black Market has opted for a vintage look combined with modern modular layout, getting that rustic appeal, which works very well with what the company offers.

Sweet Magnolia Gelato has gone for a retro look, but also has used some eye-catching animations. This combination gives the site a sleek modern feel, while it is still keeping an older style charm and is helping the business owners telling their story.

5. Modular design


Modular design isn’t new, but it has gained popularity in the last few years, because It provides a better organization and structure appearance of the web page and it looks nice and clean on any screen size. Even if modular design has attracted the designers’ interest since 2011, and could be considered pretty “old”, I would expect it to continue in 2017, especially for heavy content based websites.

6. Mobile-first design


There no news that the use of mobile platforms and handheld services has increased so dramatically in the last few years, that mobile-first is no longer a feature. It’s vital. Additionally, Google favors mobile-friendly websites and rank them much higher in the search results. Therefore, not just major brands, but also the small companies, have already adopted this, in order to offer a better user experience and avoid losing potential customers. It’s true that just designing a responsive website, the people will not engage and  it will not lead to a higher conversion rate. But not having a mobile ready website leaves you missing all the action. In addition, be ready to follow age-responsive design, which allows adapting to a specific age competency of the user.

7. Explainer videos


Product explainer videos and video background have increased in popularity in the last few years and continue to grow, as long as they are an alternative to reading a lot of content the user may not read. More and more videos appear to make the website content much valuable, add some dynamic to the website static imagery and catch the eye of your visitors in a more efficient way. In fact, a recent report from Google predicts that 74% of all web traffic in 2017 will come from video. So, the websites will feature more full-screen glossy videos, as long as three-quarters of all web traffic will be generated through video content.

8. Advanced animation and GIFs


Rich, clever and advanced video animation is another great way to make your website to stand out from your competition. It seems to be a never-ending trend in the web design game, because of what you can accomplish through their simplicity. If it’s used properly, the animations grab the visitors’ attention, enhance the users interaction and turn the web page into a great and outstanding one. Therefore, I’m expecting to see more animation and GIFs in 2017, and not just from the major brands. 

9. Virtual reality


VR finally went mainstream in 2016, as numerous gaming headsets have been released and 360 video has increased in search interest. It’s really interesting to see how virtual reality’s popularity grows, as the medium and matter are closer to what we know. The UI challenges with VR are both more complex and easier to understand than conversational interfaces, so I expect the designers are going to think of interesting ways to incorporate 360 video into websites during 2017. If you aren’t already aware, Google’s VR View is a JavaScript API that easily allows you to add 360 video experiences to your own website.

As a successful business owner or a website designer, you need to keep up with all the latest web design trends if you want to succeed in this virtual market. But you don’t need to use all of them. In fact, before using any of these trendy elements, you should put into your target audience’s shoes and then start working with trends. Because all these hot web design elements have only the mission to add some engagement and real value to your business presence online and make it stand out from competitors.
